The type beat genre within hip hop is a debatable topic. Some music producers think it’s great of explaining a specific instrumental to hip hop artists. While other producers feel that you are stealing the sound of another producer. There is no getting around the fact that when rap artists go online looking for rap instrumentals they usually look for a specific rap artist followed by the words.

What Is A Type Beat?

A type beat is where underground producers create hip hop music in a style similar to that of a specific rap artists.

Using the phrase attached to that specific rap artist gives the up and coming artist a familiarity with that given instrumental.

If you take for example the artist Drake. A Drake beat might be a mixture of different styles of instrumentals. Some of which would include, trap, old school, sample and rnb styles of music.

If you take artists like The Migos, Gucci Mane and Future, ninety-nine per cent of the time these artists only ever rap over modern trap music

Then if you pick hip hop artists like 2 Pac, Biggie or Nas style instrumental, you will quickly understand that this is a old school or sample type instrumental.

Why Do You Make Type Beat Instrumentals?

Inspiration has to come from somewhere. Whether or not the attribution of specific artists plus the phrase,is associated with it or not. Most of the time when I go to make any type instrumental I am looking for the elements of what makes the music stand out.

If I removed the attribution of associated with any of the music that I have produced nobody would know where my inspiration came from. I don’t believe in completely copying the music that has inspired me. That is never my goal. My focus is to place myself right there in the studio with an influential rapper.

Here I am creating a more creative mindset to see what type of instrumentals I could make if I had been commissioned to do so. Inspiration has to come from somewhere.

New music will always be found on beat player starting from the top.

I Can this is a popular Rick Ross Style Instrumental. It was inspired by Lord Knows which featured Drake and Rick Ross. That song was produced by one of my favourite hip hop producers Just Blaze.

My I Can beat takes influence from the Gospel hip hop and old school music with the drums taking a more modern live event approach.

Freestyle Freedom this is a more modern approach to a neo-soul beat.Inspired by the music producers that make modern hip hop music that are un-sampled but sound like they have been chopped from a record.

I feel that this particular instrumental is more of a J Cole beat. Taking inspiration from J Coles the last album I feel that I wanted to make something a rap artist could become a storyteller.

Here you will find my latest Xxxtentacion beat which I called Stay Close.

This a melodic trap type beat with a mixture of guitar riff samples backed by a trap drum pattern.

The undertone of the instrumentation has intricate percussive elements while the core of the beat is built an around a pitched vocal melody.

The majority of Xxxtentacion instrumentals have very little change-ups, here I only created a middle 8 to define certain changes in song structure.

Daydream is a cut from the Drake instrumental cloth. Again this has a freestyle beat element to the instrumental.

Throwing the lyricist deep into storytelling lyrics. I can hear Drake influences from the lonely piano accompanied by a simple of kilter boom-bap drum pattern.

To give this track an old school vibe, I filtered a the piano and played around with a number of reverb effects.

Giving the track a more old school 90’s sound but still having the Drake More Life feel. Similar to that of a rap artist rapping about his or her past.

What Type Of Instrumentals Do You Make?

I make a number of instrumentals inspired by both the producers and the artists.

Some of which include a Drake J Cole ,  KiD CuDi , Kendrick Lamar , Migos , The  Weeknd , and Rick Ross and many other artists.

Turn Up {The Migos }

Turn Up is an instrumental that has a dark commercial trap vibe. This instrumental is very current.

I think the angle I was going for with this instrumental is along the lines of a Migos instrumental

The instrumental is very casual, confident and hypnotic.

One the offset it sounds rather repetitious, with very little instrumentation.

But when you are trying to make trap music in style of Nicki Minaj or The Migos you have to find a very simple hook that rap artist can mould into their own creation.

Love Child this stems from a synth piano sample that I got from one of DJ Pain 1 beat making Friday sample pack. At that time I feel that Drake and Pusha’s beef was a hot topic. So

I decided to make a Pusha Beat. It starts with an eerie echo piano chord structure.

These piano chords have been heavily processed with reverb and delay.

Shakin That is a club trap song. Sometimes when trap music are popular on the first listen I just don’t understand why people are hooked.

Taking, for example, two of Tyga’s Biggest hit “Rack City” and “Taste”.

Both have a very casual trap drum pattern and very little instrumentation.

This was the vibe I was going for in this Shakin that Instrumental.

More along the line of a Tyga beat. I wanted to see what I could do with a very basic 808 drum pattern, mixed with chopped female vocals and simple bell-like melody.

The result is a very confident summertime club track. Very radio friendly. Short sweet and catchy.

Open Up this instrumental stemmed from my inspiration from Bryson Tiller. I am a big fan of his movement by branding his music trap soul. I think it’s genius.

While this new sound which is really just a mixture of trap and rnb elements combined with Tiller’s vocals makes for a winning formula. I wanted to create a Bryson Tiller that not only had the trap soul element but had real commercial appeal.

Helping New Rap Artists Find My Music.

There is a number of up and coming hip hop artists around the world searching online for rap music as we speak. It is my duty to serve this new audience with the type of tracks they are looking for.

I just make sense to make hip hop music that I like and what rap artists are searching for online. If I just named my music a generic song name nobody would find it.

Does Your Music Contain Samples?

Not any more. There are 2 sampled tracks left on the website. I only kept them up there to show hip hop artists I can still sample records.

But due to promotion restrictions and almost losing my YouTube Channel because of samples and remixes, I no longer use unlicensed sampled music in my production.

Any beat that sound sampled is heavily processed to give an old school boom bap style. Any vocal chops found in my beat have come from sample packs which are royalty free from Modern Producers.
